A scaffolder has been sentenced to 4 months in prison, suspended for 12 months and ordered to pay over £2,500 in fines and costs after a worker suffered a fractured skull when a pulley wheel fell 7 meters and struck his head.

A HSE investigation found that the wheel had not been properly secured to the scaffold and that the structure was inadequately braced.

A spokesperson for the HSE said:

“Gin wheels are a common accessory for scaffolders and must be attached correctly.”

In this case the wheel was not adequately attached and it was almost inevitable it would fall off and cause a danger to anyone walking underneath.
