Being Members of SafeContractor and Constructionline: What It Means for Clients and Contractors

Being members of SafeContractor and Constructionline means a business has been independently assessed against recognised UK standards for health and safety, compliance, and organisational competence.

Both schemes are widely used across the construction and built-environment sector to help clients verify that contractors meet expected safety and procurement requirements.

Why SafeContractor and Constructionline Matter

Many organisations now require contractors to hold both SafeContractor and Constructionline membership as part of their supplier approval process.

Together, they provide:

  • Independent verification of health and safety systems
  • Confidence for clients and procurement teams
  • Reduced risk when appointing contractors
  • Streamlined tender and onboarding processes

Being members of both schemes demonstrates a proactive and professional approach to compliance.

What SafeContractor Membership Demonstrates

SafeContractor focuses on health and safety competence and is SSIP-recognised.

Membership confirms that a contractor has:

  • A suitable health and safety policy
  • Effective risk assessments and method statements (RAMS)
  • Training and competence management in place
  • Accident reporting and monitoring procedures
  • Valid insurance cover

SafeContractor is often required for site access, frameworks, and ongoing contract work.

What Constructionline Membership Demonstrates

Constructionline is a pre-qualification and verification platform used extensively in public and private sector procurement.

Membership demonstrates that a business has been checked for:

  • Company and director verification
  • Financial standing
  • Health and safety competence (SSIP at Silver and Gold levels)
  • Insurance and compliance documentation
  • Environmental and quality management (Gold level)

Constructionline is commonly required by local authorities, housing associations, and Tier 1 contractors.

Why Clients Look for Both Accreditations

Being members of SafeContractor and Constructionline provides broader assurance than holding either scheme alone.

Together they:

  • Reduce duplication of PQQs
  • Provide confidence at both site and organisational level
  • Support public sector procurement requirements
  • Demonstrate consistency in safety management

For clients, this means lower risk and greater transparency.

Benefits for Contractors

For contractors, being members of SafeContractor and Constructionline helps to:

  • Win more work
  • Meet tender and framework requirements
  • Reduce repetitive assessments
  • Improve credibility with clients
  • Demonstrate ongoing compliance, not just one-off approval

Many contractors find both memberships essential for remaining competitive.

Maintaining Membership and Compliance

Membership of both schemes is not a one-time exercise.

Contractors must:

  • Renew annually
  • Keep policies and RAMS up to date
  • Maintain valid insurance
  • Update company details promptly

Failure to do so can result in suspension or loss of approval.

Summary

Being members of SafeContractor and Constructionline demonstrates that a contractor meets recognised UK health and safety, compliance, and procurement-readiness standards. Together, these accreditations provide clients with confidence and help contractors maintain eligibility for a wide range of work opportunities.

    The Common Assessment Standard CAS

For pre-qualification in public sector projects exceeding £5,337,000,000, the Common Assessment Standard CAS is now the preferred method.

The new “Common Assessment Standard” is being introduced as a new way to reduce the number of accreditation’s SME suppliers in the construction industry need to gain in order to comply with Health & Safety in the industry.

The Common Assessment Standard CAS will initially be available through CHAS, ConstructionLine and Achilles. The idea is that the other major providers will then join in the scheme.

The assessment process for CAS is likely to require additional and more robust information than the current health and safety requirements already in place for the three providers. There will also be a price increase for assessment fees but will work out more cost effective if you are in the position where you need more than one accreditation to work with your clients.

The new Common Assessment Standard CAS will contain 248 questions, covering your companies’ health and safety, financial health, environmental performance and corporate and social responsibility.

This is in comparison to the 190 questions already being asked at the moment.

We will keep you updated with the latest information on release dates and how we can help you, in the meantime if we can help you with anything please call on 0800 031 5404 during office hours.

Get SSIP Accredited to access the work

If you are looking to access public sector projects you will need to have a SSIP accreditation for example CHAS, Construction line or PQS. There are over thirty SSIP accreditation bodies and it can be tricky to select the right one for your business.

We can help you select the right provider for your sector and budget.

Complete the form on this link or call 0800 031 5404 during office hours.

    PQS Accreditation

The most economical SSIP accreditation is PQS. Obtaining a PQS accreditation also gives you access to CHAS and Construction Line through deem to satisfy. We can tell you more about this when we speak.

Completing PQS application takes time and resources, as well as completing lots of forms and health and safety documentation.

We can make it easy for you by doing all the leg work for you. We carry out over 500 applications a year with 100% success.

For a small fee, we can take the pain away for you.

Complete the form, and we will tell you how it works and how much the whole process costs, including the SSIP fee for your circumstances.

      CHAS

CHAS recently introduced two new levels CHAS Premium or Premium Plus within the CHAS portal.

They both come with an additional assessment Fee as well as the preparation of more information. We have had a number of people asking us to help them with these levels although they were not required for anyone who is only needed the basic level of CHAS to work with their existing customers.

The additional levels are generally a requirement from a client that you are currently working with or are looking to work for. The original CHAS level is more than enough unless you have been asked for the increase.

Both levels can easily be added on to your account so there is no worry about being able to upgrade at a later point.

If your unsure which CHAS Premium or Premium Plus you need please get in touch and we will be able to advise you.
